Encountering counterfeiters online

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Looking to score this season’s Prada bag at 60% off? There will always be the temptation to buy luxury goods at a reduced cost, otherwise why else would we happily elbow our way through the sale-seekers in January, spend hours at outlet shopping centres and scour the internet for that coveted handbag marked down to a bonafide bargain?

But buyer beware, counterfeit sites are swarming the internet and Google (along with other search engines, of course) is at the heart of this controversy. Search for ‘UGG Australia’ and at least six sponsored links pop up offering up to 70% off, all counterfeit, most based in China. Hand over your credit card details and it is unlikely you will ever receive the product; and if you do, it will be a cheaply-made fake.

Google does perform random checks on the companies that purchase ad space, however the company says it cannot regulate the internet. Experts say it’s best to avoid sites with an unusual domain name or those which include numbers or hyphens, and always look for a postal address on the website.  And remember if it’s too good to be true, it probably is – unless it’s being sold on www.vente-privee.com of course!

Watch fair sparks optimism for economic revival

How are luxury watch brands faring in the current market? If the 2010 Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) is anything to go by, the worst is over. The Geneva watch fair opened its doors yesterday to display the crème de la crème of the world’s most sought-after complicated watches (primarily Richemont brands) and offered an unrivalled insight into upcoming trends.

SIHH sprawls 30,000m² of flawless cream hallways and bespoke branded booths, an opulence to echo the predicted upturn and to restore confidence amongst international media, retailers and watch aficionados. This year demonstrated a retro trend amongst most brands, a signal to us all that the foundations of great watchmaking cannot be shaken by an economic downturn and a reminder of why these marques are – and have always been – architects of the finest watches in the world.

Highlight of the exhibition? For me it was the remarkable A. Lange & Söhne ZEITWERK Luminous with glowing numerals that seemed to float across the dial of the watch; a digital masterpiece and reminder of Lange’s ability to push the boundaries of pioneering watchmaking whilst remaining true to its heritage.

NZ finds its sweet spot

I spent an enjoyable afternoon at the New Zealand Wine Annual Trade Tasting with a number of the Focus PR crew yesterday. We met some really passionate producers, sampled the new 2009 vintages and saw why sales of NZ wines are at an all-time high.

The tasting was buzzing and the producers were particularly positive, saying it had been packed all day. Between us we managed to visit most of the 70+ tables and bumped into Oz Clarke, who we’d last seen filming at the Courvoisier Architectural Punch Bowl in December, Anthony Rose, Mathew Jukes and Jamie Goode to name but a few journalists.

There was a lot more red wine at the tasting compared with previous years, and to highlight this there was a fantastic self pour seminar on NZ red wines at which the Elephant Hill Reserve Syrah really stood out. The 2009 Sauvignon Blancs were also showing really nicely – crisp and aromatic with mineral and gooseberry overtones. However, my highlights from the tasting had to come from the special showcase table: sweet wine at last! Regulations over the importation of these wines into the EU have thankfully been relaxed allowing us to enjoy some of the fantastic late harvest and sweet-style wines. So, look out for my faves, Craggy Range Noble Riesling and the Waipara West Late Harvest Chardonnay!
