The ninth edition of Clerkenwell Design Week, a crucial festival in the promotion of London’s creative industry, spotlighting the area’s unique history, craftsmanship and commerce, hit our stomping ground. Clerkenwell is home to more creative businesses per square mile than anywhere else in the world. Being in the heart of the design district, we were lucky enough to grab the striking pink lanyards and take in some of the intriguing events for a creative fix on our doorstep.

With more than 300 events across 90+ contemporary furniture showrooms, there was plenty to indulge in. Pink map in-hand we set off to some of the main exhibition areas: Elements, Platform, Detail, Light, British Collection, Project, and Design Fields.

Alongside the exhibitions and showrooms, the streets were enhanced by Pipe Line, a new approach to street furniture with bike racks and benches formed from bright, curved, steel tubes.

Many of this year’s projects were designed around the theme of the moment sustainability. The Garden of St. James played host to a series of focal points from Scale Rule (a life-size kaleidoscopic oculus), built around the theme and designed by GCSE students. Each string layer represented past present and future, and passers-by were encouraged to take a minute to look up, and reflect on the natural elements around.

We saw Fabric nightclub in a totally different light; the multi-level brick-walled vaults formed the backdrop for high-end brand BROKIS Puro with its statement light in all its 2.5m diameter glory and handcrafted artisan pendants by Naomi Paul.

Spa Fields, next to Exmouth Market, hosted leading furniture and product design from around the world. The Collective Agency’s stand showcased beautiful, sustainably manufactured furniture such as LOLL Designs’, charming outdoor furniture made entirely of recycled waste milk bottles – innovation at its best. And Grillo’s outdoor kitchen took al fresco cooking to a whole new sizzling level with a 360 grill.

Next on our agency agenda will be Imbibe Live, the interactive on-trade drinks show stacked with established and up & coming brands; it always serves up thought-provoking talks by industry luminaries.

We are never short of inspiration, that is for sure.
